A Pie Thing.

Hi readers, it's been almost three months since I last updated my blog as I'm so busy for assignments, tests, and other stuffs. And yeah, the coursework part has finally come to an end. I have enroll to Taylor's University Lakeside Campus late in August and currently doing Banking & Finance at Taylor's Business School. (Year 1 Sem 1 student :P) Last month, my groupmates and I went to interview a cafe in Damansara Uptown for our assignment purpose. The café is called 'A Pie Thing' which set up by three owners and it is situated at Damansara Utama.

The company being interviewed is “A Pie Thing” and it is 5 months old. The owners of “A Pie Thing” used to work for an advertising agency. The owners have always wanted to set up their own business, and finally, they agreed to set up this café. They wanted to get outstanding achievements in the food and beverage industry, thus, they have decided to introduce pie, which is very different from other cafes in Malaysia. Their inspiration to open “A Pie Thing” was because pies were quite common in western countries like Australia, but were not popular in Malaysia. So they have found out that this is the right product to introduce to Malaysians.

Since "A Pie Thing" is still new in Malaysia, they do not have any accolades to their name yet and they are still trying hard to get an award in the meantime. He feels that the biggest award is winning the hearts of the people and it is the most important part of their business. The daily operation of “A Pie Thing” is, from 4pm to 11pm, which is a unique timing. This is because they do their production, which is making the pie, in the morning, and only bake it in the afternoon in order to make sure that their pie is fresh from the oven. Baking will be done during daytime and the pies will be sold in the evening. Besides that, all three of the owners have distinct roles. The first owner is responsible for making the savory pie. The second owner does the sweet pie while the last owner, who is Mr. Alex Yeo, the person who approaches the group members, manages the front shop operations such as selling, promoting and approaching customers.

“A Pie Thing” targeted market consists of youngsters, students, young working adults as well as college students, as this segment of the population is more willing to experience new things and accept changes. After operating for several months, they started to have an aging population visit their café such as families and elderly couples, which was beyond their expectations. The product they sell is different from other cafes as there are no other shops which are specialized in pies. They offer savory and sweet pies with unique flavors and are also reasonably priced.

As a benchmark in the food and beverage industry, retail prices of a product should be three times of the cost in order to cover the expenses. The owners also try to make the price affordable to consumers. Hence, the most expensive set they sell here at 'A Pie Thing' is only RM20. According to Mr. Yeo, the pie should not only be a meal, but also a snack. Therefore, it is very reasonable for a meal to cost around RM10- to RM20.
